On Friday
11.05.18, Year 4 showed off their creative side in an art lesson dedicated to
the life and work of Frida Kahlo. They shared what they knew of her life and
times as a class, learning about the ways in which she painted to overcome the
pain and solitude of Polio and recovery from a serious tram accident. They were
deeply moved by the resilience of a woman, who despite these setbacks, refused
to bow to the aesthetic conventions of the day and looked out at the world
proudly through a series of self-portraits.
Observing
the abundance of nature in her work, the class sculpted clay monkeys,
resembling those in Frida Kahlo’s paintings. They improved their skills,
kneading and working the clay before using tools to add detail. As a group they
created an exhibition of their work, offering each other positive critique and
exploring ideas for further work. Well done, Year 4!
